Getting ready for a Boys and Girls Outdoor Leadership (BOLD & GOLD) trip? Whether you’re already registered or still deciding if this adventure is right for you, this guide will walk you through the basics of what to expect.

BOLD & GOLD trips are designed to build confidence, leadership skills, and connection through outdoor adventure. No matter the trip, participants can expect a fun-filled week, or weeks, outdoors with a supportive group and experienced instructors.

Backcountry and Frontcountry Trips

BOLD & GOLD offers both backcountry and frontcountry trips. On a backcountry trip, participants carry all the items needed for their trip in a large backpack. Each night, the group sets up camp in a new location after hiking there. The next morning, they pack up and head out for the next stop on their adventure. On these trips, participants can expect expansive views of the night sky and the chance to see places few people get to experience. They will not have access to running water or electricity.

On a frontcountry trip, participants drive to a campground and set up their campsite for the trip. Each day, they take day trips to rock climb, hike, or explore a state or national park. On frontcountry trips, participants may have access to running water and more established garbage cans, though they will still be without electricity.

Where BOLD & GOLD Trips Go

BOLD & GOLD trips mostly take place in some of Washington’s most incredible outdoor spaces.

What the Trip Experience Is Like

No matter the destination, participants can expect a mix of outdoor adventure, leadership development, and fun in a small group setting of two instructors and up to 10 participants.

Instructors lead games and activities that challenge the group to work together and do so with some silliness along the way. Early in the trip, each group completes a hand contract to establish group norms, build group culture, and set goals for the experience.

Throughout the trip, participants take on different responsibilities. Depending on the day, they may serve as the Leader of the Day, the group photographer, the journal keeper, and more.

Each evening ends with a Courage Circle, where the group reflects on the day and plans for tomorrow.

Where & How Trips Start & End

Trips begin at the Cascade People’s Center in downtown Seattle, where participants meet their instructors and fellow group members in an opening circle and start getting to know one another.

Before heading out, the group prepares for the journey with a gear check. During this time, BOLD & GOLD staff review personal and group gear and teach participants how to pack a backpack effectively. Participants borrowing items from the BOLD & GOLD gear library receive them during the gear check.

Once the group is packed, participants eat lunch, take part in a safety briefing with the course director, and then travel by bus to their first destination.

On the last day of the adventure, participants break down their campsite and return to the Cascade People’s Center. There, the group unpacks, cleans group gear, and participates in a closing circle.

How Challenging Are BOLD & GOLD Trips?

BOLD & GOLD trips are designed to meet participants where they are, and no outdoor experience is required. One-week trips are introductory and are appropriate for participants who have never been on this type of adventure before.

Two-week trips are more challenging. Participants who are new to this type of adventure can still be successful if they are very motivated, open to learning new skills, willing to work closely as a team, and able to demonstrate leadership skills.

Trips may feel very challenging at times, regardless of a participant’s experience in the outdoors. Instructors work to make sure challenges stay within the abilities of the group.

Participants do not need outdoor experience to complete a BOLD & GOLD trip, and they do not need to be athletes. Being in shape and physically active before arrival can be helpful, but it is not required for introductory experiences.
