The Olympic Coast is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most extraordinary places to hike and camp, with star-filled skies, dramatic sunsets, coastal wildlife, and ever-changing tides. Boys and Girls Outdoor Leadership (BOLD & GOLD) trips offers an experience that is both memorable and deeply rewarding for young people.

Stretching 73 miles from Neah Bay to Oil City, the coastal ecosystem of Olympic National Park is truly one of a kind. For young people who are ready to hike, camp, and grow through challenge, the Olympic Coast is one of the most powerful places to do it.

Why the Olympic Coast Is So Special

The Washington coast offers a very different kind of hiking and camping experience than mountain trails or forest campgrounds. On the Olympic Coast, the landscape is always changing. The tides reshape the shoreline. Driftwood lines the beaches. Sea stacks rise out of the ocean. Eagles circle overhead. Tide pools reveal a world of life at your feet.

This is not just a scenic destination. It is an active, immersive environment that invites young adventurers to pay attention, work together, and move through nature with care.

Olympic National Park is also located on the traditional lands of multiple Pacific Northwest tribes. Eight Olympic Peninsula tribes continue to recognize a relationship to the park based on traditional land use, origin, beliefs, mythology, and spiritual beliefs and practices: the Lower Elwha Klallam, Jamestown S’Klallam, Port Gamble S’Klallam, Skokomish, Quinault, Hoh, Quileute, and Makah. Any experience on the Olympic Coast should begin with respect for the people who have long held connection to this place.

Coastal Hiking and Camping Is a Different Kind of Adventure

There are many hiking and camping options in Washington, the Olympic Coast stands out because it offers challenge alongside beauty.

Some areas of the coast are just a short walk from a trailhead. Others require backcountry travel along the beach, careful route planning, and attention to the tides. In some places, headlands become impassable even at low tide, making overland crossings necessary to continue safely.

That means coastal backpacking is not just about endurance. It is about awareness, preparation, and teamwork.

Young people on BOLD & GOLD trips do more than hike to a campsite. They learn how to travel responsibly in a dynamic environment, build confidence through shared challenge, and experience the kind of growth that happens when they step away from daily routines and into the outdoors.

What Young People Can Gain From a Coastal Adventure

A hiking and camping trip on the coast can offer so much more than beautiful views. For young people, these experiences can help build:

  • Confidence through trying something new

  • Resilience through outdoor challenge

  • Connection with peers and mentors

  • A stronger sense of responsibility and teamwork

  • Wonder, curiosity, and appreciation for the natural world

There is something powerful about carrying what you need, walking with purpose, and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. These moments help young people discover what they are capable of.

Tips for Coastal Travel

The Olympic Coast is beautiful, but it also requires preparation and respect. BOLD & GOLD teaches participants that safe coastal travel starts with understanding the environment.

Our tips for coastal travel include always carrying a tide table and knowing how to use it, bringing a topographic map, and keeping close track of time while hiking along the beach. On this coastline, timing matters. Route decisions matter. Preparation matters.

That is part of what makes the experience so memorable. It teaches young people that adventure and responsibility go hand in hand.
