The Y is committed to helping all children stay safe in and around water!
The Y is committed to helping all children stay safe in and around water!
Whether in a backyard pool, bathtub, or local stream, water can quickly become dangerous, and drowning can happen in the brief moment it takes to check a text or look away. Teaching children to swim and stay safe around water is one of the most important life skills parents can give, helping protect their lives while building confidence.

Your donation helps families access swim lessons and water safety education, building confidence in the water and skills that can last a lifetime.

Teaching kids to be safe around water is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
Globally, more than 40 people die by drowning every hour of every day. In the U.S., about ten people drown each day. Of those, two are children under age 15.
More children ages 1-4 years die from drowning than any other cause of death (except birth defects). For all ages, it is the fifth leading cause of unintentional injury death.
The fatal-drowning rate of Black/African-American children is three times higher than white children. 80 percent of those who drown are male.
Research has shown that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning among children ages 1 to 4 years by up to 88 percent.

The YMCA of Greater Seattle is committed to removing barriers that limit all people from developing their full potential, and that includes being safe around water.
The Y is “America’s Swim Instructor” and the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming. Each year, the YMCA of Greater Seattle teaches more than 13,000 people how to swim through our group and private swim lessons. We also offer scholarships so that a family's financial situation is not a barrier to learning to swim.

Partnerships with Y-USA, local governments, and non-profit organizations help the Y extend our reach into our community.
Develop personal water safety and basic swimming skills. Swimmers gain a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.
Refine your stroke, practice your breathing rhythm, or elevate your turns with private swim lessons. Instructors teach from the pool edge, so participants must be able to swim 25 yards unsupported.
The Y is a great place to make a splash. Learn about safe, socially-distanced ways to enjoy the water at the Y. These activities are offered just for members and reservations are required.
