LITs must have completed at least one backpacking trip with BOLD & GOLD, or comparable experience, and be entering 12th grade in the fall of 2025 or have graduated high school in the spring of 2026.

Yes, LITs register and pay for their one-week Training Trip. The cost of the Training Trip is a one-time payment that also covers the cost of the Mentor Trip. There is no additional registration for the Mentor Trip. As with all our programs, financial aid is available.

LITs will be with a cohort of their peers on the Training Trip and led by experienced BOLD & GOLD Instructors. The curriculum focuses on mentorship, inclusion, facilitation, effective leadership, and honing backcountry skills. 

On the Mentor Trip, LITs work closely with two lead Instructors. The Instructors will always be responsible for the health and safety of every participant, LIT included, on the trip. LITs are role models for the middle school participants and play a role in facilitating curriculum and general trip logistics. 

The Mentor Trip takes place during July or August after LITs complete the Training Trip. If accepted to the program, you will receive a special code to register for the Training Trip, and we work with you to find a Mentor Trip placement that fits with your schedule.

All candidates for the LIT program must complete an online application and an interview with the program director. Accepted applicants will receive registration instructions.

Middle School Mentor Trip Request Deadline: January 1; admin staff will register LITs for their mentor trip once placements have been confirmed with the program director
