Boys & Girls Outdoor Leadership (BOLD & GOLD) offers life-changing summer adventures for youth ages 11–18. Guided by experienced instructors, participants explore the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, from its mountains and rivers to its forests and coastlines. Fun, friendship, and discovery come first as youth build confidence and learn leadership, teamwork, and outdoor skills rooted in the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
From camping and backpacking to rock climbing, BOLD & GOLD trips are designed to engage young people of all interests and ability levels.

Our camping trips open the door for youth to experience the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, starlit skies, alpine meadows, and glacier-fed streams, while building skills that prepare them for life. Each day brings opportunities to learn outdoor essentials like cooking and map reading, but the real growth comes from working together, forming friendships, and discovering new strengths.

Backpacking through the rugged North Cascades or along the wild Olympic Coast, youth discover what it means to challenge themselves and rely on one another. Carrying everything they need, they learn resilience, leadership, and problem-solving in ways that only the wilderness can teach. These journeys foster friendships that feel like family and experiences that shape character for years to come.

In Washington’s stunning climbing destinations, youth learn what it means to trust themselves and others. Whether scaling their first wall or pushing their skills to new heights, they are supported to take bold steps, encourage their peers, and celebrate each milestone together. The views from the top are unforgettable, but even more lasting are the lessons in courage, responsibility, and friendship.

The Leaders in Training (LIT) program is a chance for high school juniors and seniors to step up as mentors and leaders. After a one-week backcountry training trip focused on leadership and wilderness skills, participants assist on a middle school trip alongside experienced instructors. It’s an incredible opportunity to grow, give back, and lead by example.
Our single-gender trips — BOLD for boys and GOLD for girls — allows participants to be themselves while stepping out of their comfort zone. On all-gender expeditions, instructors foster teamwork in ways that empower every participant and ensure equal space for all voices. Trips are open to anyone who identifies with the gender of the trip.

On GOLD trips, young women are empowered to be their courageous selves as they overcome obstacles and bond with a group of their peers in some of the most beautiful places in the Pacific Northwest.

On BOLD trips, a community of young men and leaders who share a love of the great outdoors come together to explore the beautiful and wild lands of the Pacific Northwest.
