Kids blowing bubbles in a backyard

Summer is the perfect time to slow down, soak up sunshine, and make lasting memories with the people you love. Summer wonderland celebrates all the magic this season brings—from bubbles and beach balls to frozen treats and backyard adventures.

Whether your family has five minutes or a full afternoon, there are plenty of simple ways to bring summer fun to life at home and in your community.

Create a Backyard Bubble Lab

Turn bubble time into a fun experiment! Try making different bubble wands using cookie cutters, pipe cleaners, or even fly swatters. Challenge kids to create the tiniest bubble, the biggest bubble, or even the longest-lasting bubble.

Bonus idea: Add a little glycerin or corn syrup to homemade bubble solution and see which recipe creates the strongest bubbles.

Go on a Sunset Color Hunt

As the sun begins to set, head outside for a neighborhood color scavenger hunt. Can your family find:

  • Something bright orange
  • A flower with two colors
  • A shiny object
  • A cloud with an interesting shape
  • Something that reminds you of summer

Bring a phone or sketchbook along to capture your discoveries.

Host a Family Flip-Flop Fashion Show

Decorate inexpensive flip-flops with stickers, ribbon, foam shapes, markers, or washable paint. Then turn your hallway or backyard into a silly summer runway for a family fashion parade.

No flip-flops available? Decorate paper versions instead!

Try a "No Electricity" Summer Night

Choose one evening to unplug and enjoy time together without screens. Use flashlights, glow sticks, board games, storytelling, shadow puppets, or backyard stargazing for entertainment.

Sometimes the simplest traditions become the memories families cherish most.

Create a Watermelon Taste Test

Cut watermelon into fun shapes and host a mini-tasting challenge. Add other fruits or toppings like lime juice, Tajin, mint, or yogurt dip, then have kids vote on their favorite combinations.

For extra fun, turn it into a blind taste test and see who can guess each flavor.

Plan a Backyard Campout

Pitch a tent outside or create a cozy indoor fort using blankets and chairs. Add flashlights, books, stuffed animals, and snacks for an easy family adventure.

Spend the evening stargazing, singing campfire songs, telling stories, putting on shadow puppet shows, or playing glow stick games.

Make Summer Memory Jars

Place slips of paper and markers in a jar and encourage family members to write down their favorite summer moments all month long. Read them together before school starts again.

Some memories may be big adventures, while others may be simple moments like:

  • Eating popsicles outside
  • Seeing a rainbow
  • Dancing in the kitchen
  • Find a funny-shaped cloud

Keep Summer Simple

The best summer memories are often the simplest ones - laughing together, getting messy, trying something new, or slowing down long enough to enjoy each other's company.

This season, we hope your family finds plenty of sunshine, creativity, and wonder both at the Y and beyond.

Happy summer adventures!
