STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) encourages children to ask questions, solve problems, think creatively, and explore the world around them through hands-on learning.

The best part? You don't need a classroom to spark curiosity. Seattle is full of opportunities for families to learn, build, create, and explore together. Here are five STEAM-inspired adventures- one for each letter in STEAM.

S is for Science: Explore Tide Pools

Visit one of our local beaches, like Carkeek Park, Golden Gardens Park, or Richmond Beach, during low tide and discover the incredible marine life living just beneath the surface. Look for sea stars, crabs, anemones, and other fascinating creatures while encouraging your child to observe, ask questions, and record what they find.

Family Challenge: Can you spot three different kinds of shells, two sea creatures, and one unique rock formation?

T is for Technology: Get Creative at a Library Makerspace

Many libraries throughout the Greater Seattle area offer free makerspaces where families can explore technology together. Try coding activities, robotics kits, 3D printers, button makers, or other hands-on maker projects at your local King County Library System branch.

Family Challenge: Design or build something using technology, then talk together about how your creation could help people in your community.

E is for Engineering: Discover the Ballard Locks

Visit the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and watch one of Seattle's most impressive engineering achievements in action. Children can see boats move between different water levels while learning how engineers designed the locks to safely connect our waterways.

Family Challenge: Recreate a simple lock system at home using plastic containers and water to see how changing water levels help move boats.

A is for Art: Find Inspiration in Nature

Take a family walk through the Olympic Sculpture Park and explore larger-than-life artwork set against Seattle's beautiful waterfront. Invite your child to sketch a favorite sculpture or create their own masterpiece inspired by the shapes, colors, and textures they discover outdoors.

Family Challenge: Collect natural materials like leaves, sticks, or rocks (where permitted) and create your own nature-inspired sculpture at home.

M is for Math: Make Everyday Adventures Count

A visit to Pike Place Market is a great opportunity to practice math skills in a fun, real-world setting. Count steps between landmarks, compare prices, estimate quantities, or look for shapes and patterns throughout the market.

Family Challenge: Give your child a small budget and let them practice adding, subtracting, and making spending decisions while shopping with local vendors.

Keep the Curiosity Going

STEAM learning can happen almost anywhere. Whether you're exploring tide pools, watching boats at the locks, creating art outdoors, or solving math challenges at the market, every adventure helps children build confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

We hope these local activities inspire your family to keep learning, exploring, and creating together. Happy adventuring!
