A Back-to-School Celebration for Kids, Families, and Community

Smiles, laughter, and fresh haircuts filled the Matt Griffin YMCA as families, youth, and neighbors came together to celebrate community and prepare for the new school year. With the help of the Uchenna Nwosu Foundation, more than 350 students went home with backpacks and school supplies, while families enjoyed bubble wand crafts, wellness activities with our Healthy Living team — complete with stickers and doodle pads — a bouncy house, local food vendors, and giveaways from SeaTac partners.

The celebration offered something for everyone. The Seattle Sabercats junior football team encouraged youth to stay passionate about sports. Malik Parker Hill, Barber Director at Johnnie Matthews Barbering Academy, Kid getting a haircut.and his team provided free back-to-school haircuts for kids. And the Matt Griffin Board volunteers kept the fun going with a popcorn station and a philanthropy table where families could spin the wheel for prizes while learning more about the board.

Families described the day as “amazing for the kids,” a reminder of what happens when community partners, volunteers, and neighbors join forces to support youth and celebrate together.

What began with a spring introduction through Wade White of Elite 300 Sport & Entertainment grew into a meaningful partnership with the Uchenna Nwosu Foundation, making this lively, educational, and uplifting event possible.
