The new Kent YMCA branch is under construction! This will be the fourteenth Y facility in the Greater Seattle YMCA Association. We can’t wait for the Kent Y to open, so to tide us over, the architecture firm Miller Hayashi has released detailed renderings of the 50,000 square foot state-of-the-art building that will include:

  • Dedicated community gathering spaces
  • An exceptional aquatic center
  • Gym, group fitness and cardio spaces
  • Kid’s Zone play care while you work out
  • Indoor and outdoor recreation surrounded by Morrill Meadows Park
  • A new American Welcome Center for newcomers to the U.S.
  • Significant expansion of academic, child care and enrichment programs for youth

Follow the paved trails through Morrill Meadows Park to the New Kent Y entrance. Patio space will allow for outdoor fun and will feature an outdoor amphitheater and community fire pit.

The intergenerational lobby area will accommodate informal gatherings and will offer YMCA membership support in addition to Y and community event information and free coffee. From here, drop off your little ones at the Kid’s Zone, or follow the hallway to the large double gym. Locker rooms for men, women and families will be on your right, leading out to the pool.

Follow the stairs up to the fitness center on the second floor. The cardio equipment and nautilus center will be surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, facing southeast. Follow the hallway from here to find a suspended running and walking track plus three fitness studios, including a dedicated cycling studio.

The Kent community is especially excited about the new aquatic center with lap lanes, a hot tub, and a zero depth entry family activity pool. The temperature in the lap pool will be slightly cooler than the activity pool to accommodate competitive swimmers, and swimming lessons will be offered for all ages and abilities as well.

The groundbreaking for the new Kent Y took place July 21, 2018, and the crew at Abbott Construction has been making swift progress on the build, which is scheduled to be completed in time for a grand opening celebration on September 14, 2019.
