Finding help with food, housing, health care, child care, employment, or other needs isn't always simple. Even when resources are available, figuring out where to start, which programs you qualify for, and how to connect with them can take time and persistence. That's where resource navigation can help.

What is Resource Navigation?

Resource navigation is personalized, one-to-one support that helps individuals and families identify and connect with community resources that fit their needs.

Rather than simply providing a list of organizations or phone numbers, a resource navigator works with you to understand what you're looking for and helps you determine the next steps. Depending on your needs, that support may include:

  • Identifying community programs and resources
  • Helping you understand eligibility requirements and enrollment processes
  • Connecting you with organizations that provide food, housing, child care, employment assistance, health care, mental health support, public benefits, and more
  • Advocating for you as you navigate complex systems
  • Helping address barriers that may come up along the way
  • Following up to see how things are going and whether additional support is needed

Resource navigation is individualized, strengths-based, compassionate, and trauma-informed. There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach because every person and family's circumstances are different.

Why Can Resource Navigation Make a Difference?

Finding the right resource can be complicated. Housing, health care, mental health, public benefits, and other systems often have different eligibility requirements, application processes, waitlists, and entry points. Programs and availability can also change over time.

Those challenges can be even harder to navigate when you're balancing work, caring for family, managing health concerns, or dealing with other immediate needs.

You don't have to figure it all out on your own. A resource navigator can help you understand your options, determine where to start, and stay connected as you take the next steps.

From Uncertainty to a Path Forward

When John* came to the Y, he was facing several challenges and wasn’t sure where to begin. He was living in his car and lacked access to basic needs to support his well-being. He had goals of getting health insurance, finding a primary care provider, connecting with counseling, and securing stable housing, but navigating all of these systems alone felt overwhelming.

Over the next three months, a YMCA Resource Navigator walked alongside him, helping turn those goals into manageable steps. He was connected with an organization that assisted with health insurance enrollment, established care with a primary care provider, and was referred to counseling services.

When housing became a priority, John was connected with housing resources for young adults through the Y Social Impact Center. He was assigned a housing case manager and enrolled in the diversion program to help create greater stability.

By the time his case closed, John had made meaningful progress toward each of his goals. Reflecting on his experience, he shared:

“I feel like you genuinely cared and wanted to help. I did not feel judged and I felt very supported. I can’t really put into words how grateful I am. I didn’t think anything would happen at all, and it happened so fast. Thank you so much!”

John’s words capture the heart of resource navigation. When navigating complex systems feels overwhelming, having someone listen, understand what you need, break your goals into manageable steps, and walk alongside you can make the path forward feel more possible.
