It can seem hard to adjust to a change in routine, and even more difficult to start a new one.

Whether you are trying to make a positive change to your diet or renewing your commitment to an exercise routine, we’re here to help you start.

How to create new healthy habits is easier than you may think.

  1. Consider your lifestyle. To set yourself up for success, look at habits that can most easily fit into your routine. For example, can you substitute veggies as your daily snack for a healthier diet? Is there a time of day, like early morning, where you can commit to exercising? At the beginning, keep your routine as simple as possible to ensure that the habit is easy to maintain.

  2. Take small steps. For example, if your goal is to drink more water, don’t start with a gallon-challenge. Instead, increase your water intake by 1-2 glasses per day for one week. At the beginning of week 2, add another glass of water per day. Small steps are the key to long-term, attainable success.

  3. Get help with accountability. While your intentions to create new healthy habits are good, they may not prevent you from getting sidetracked by other responsibilities. When you know there is someone waiting for you or who will check-in with you, it changes your priorities and reinforces your good intentions. Try checking-in with a friend at the end of the week, synchronizing your workout schedule with a coworker’s, or using a to-do list to help hold yourself accountable.
