ALUMNI OPPORTUNITIES

For over six decades young people have gained unique, hands on experience in the processes of state government through participating in the YMCA Youth Legislature and Mock Trial programs in Washington. For many these opportunities acted as a spring board into a life of law or politics. For others it instilled in them a desire to serve their communities in other ways - as doctors, teachers, engineers, parents, small business owners, and volunteers.

What all Y&G alumni share is the knowledge that we are responsible for our community; we are part of a group dedicated to public service and to upholding the values of democracy. We want this group to continue to be involved with each other, and the YMCA Y&G Program.

What you can do

  • Write an article for our quarterly newsletter

  • Attend an alumni event

  • Volunteer during events throughout the year

To find out how else you can stay involved with Y&G both here in Washington and throughout the country contact the Y&G office for more information.

 Host Families

HOST HOME VOLUNTEERS

Each year over 450 students from around Washington State convene in Olympia for four days of debate and discussion. Students take on the roles of Senator, Representative, lobbyist, reporter, page, and session leadership.

In order to keep the program affordable for all students the YMCA Youth & Government program arranges for local families to host delegates during their time in Olympia. Delegates range in age from 14 to 18 years old and come from all over the state. Hosting students is a fun and educational experience for both delegates and volunteers and many of our host families have been volunteering for over a decade!

Host families are asked to provide the following:

-          3 nights accommodations

-          breakfast for 3 mornings

-          dinner one evening

If you are interested in volunteering to open your home to delegates please fill out our VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION PACKET and send to:

If you have questions or would like a volunteer packet mailed to your home please contact our office at 360.357.3475 or email Kendra Fredericks.

 Attorney Raters

ATTORNEYS...HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO SIT IN THE JURY BOX?

Now is your chance!

Each year the YMCA High School Mock Trial State Competition brings out some of the most talented, articulate, and enthusiastic young people from around our state. The competition takes place over the course of three days and is held at the Thurston County Courthouse in Olympia.

Real judges preside over trials and attorneys rate students on their performances and courtroom etiquette.  Attorneys score teams on their courtroom presentation, knowledge of the case, and ability to think on their feet. Each round is two and a half hours long and is preceded by a brief orientation session for volunteers.

This year's competition will take place Friday and Saturday, March 23 - 24 at the Thurston County Courthouse in Olympia (event schedule). If you are interested in volunteering to support the future of our democracy and the legal profession, please fill out our new ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM!

JUDGES, please contact Lorrie Thompson at the Administrative Office of the Courts to sign up to preside of Mock Trials at the state comptition.

To volunteer for your local district event contact the District Convener in your area.
