Join the University Family Y for Healthy Kids Day on April 26

Healthy Kids Day on April 26th: 

On Saturday, April 26 th, the University Family YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® , the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, features fun activities and giveaways, arts and crafts, healthy snacks and more to motivate families to develop a healthy routine at home. The University Family’s Healthy Kids Day takes place outside of our Branch (5003 12th Ave NE) from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday April 26th.

Highlights for this year’s Healthy Kids Day at the University Family YMCA:

  • Booths from community organizations such as: Whole Foods, Cascade Bicycle Club, The Burke Museum, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Soundbridge Seattle Symphony, Neighborcare Health, Moon Paper Tent, Chaco Canyon, Seattle Kids Dentistry, Seattle Public Libraries, First Tee of Seattle, Artist and Craftsman, Pedalheads, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Junior League, Trader Joe’s, The Little Gym, Safe Kids Seattle
  • Interactive performances by Ropeworks
  • Meet and Greet with our local firefighters and a chance to climb in the fire truck
  • Free t-shirt and goodie bags for the first 100 kids
  • Other fun activities including face painting, bouncy house, sidewalk chalk art, balloon-making and more!

New: Feldenkrais® Method series: 

Gain awareness through movement with other Y members! Through this Method, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. These improvements will often generalize to enhance functioning in other aspects of your life. 5 and 8 week series are available:

  • 5 week series: Fridays 12:15-1:15pm, April 11 - May 16
  • 8 week series: Fridays 6:30-7:30 pm, March 28 - May 16

Make a Healthy Change with ACT! 

ACT! (Actively Changing Together) is offered in partnership with Seattle Children's Hospital and helps overweight youth and their families establish healthy eating habits and incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. It is an interactive, supportive 12 week program that meets once a week. Sessions for children 8-11 and 12-14 years old are offered at various Y's as well as the Lake City Community Center.

Children must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 85% or higher for their age and have a doctor's referral to register for the program. Referral form available here. Sessions are free and open to community participants.

Register for Afterschool Programs at Eckstein Middle School 

Eckstein’s (L.E.A.D.E.R.S.) Leadership Education and Advocacy Development through Enrichment and Recreational Services is an afterschool program that allows students to apply practical knowledge from the classroom and explore concepts of leadership while engaging in their favorite afterschool activities! All classes are designed to build positive relationships and strengthen student voices while having fun! Afterschool programs start February 3rd, 2014 and end May 30th, 2014. Scholarships are automatically  distributed to  students on free and reduced lunch! Register online today!
