You can positively impact lives right in your own community with the Y. Nearly 10,000 volunteers of all ages help the Y nurture youth, improve health and well-being and assist our neighbors in need. We value your time and enthusiasm and look forward to creating a fun, fulfilling volunteer experience for you.

How To Begin

To volunteer with the Y, select an option:
  • Contact our Y to find out about upcoming and ongoing volunteer opportunities: 206.524.1400.
  • Visit your local Y to pick up a volunteer application.
  • Search for "YMCA" at United Way of King County's Volunteer Center. Many branches post specific volunteer opportunities here (listings may not include all available opportunities).
 

 How Can I Help?

 

University Family Y - Powered by the Community!

Below are a sample of volunteer opportunities that we have.

 

Homeless Youth Program Volunteer - Volunteers set up/clean up drop in areas, help supervise sign in and dining area, hand out hygiene items and towels, interact and build relationships with program participants. Must be at least 20 years old.

 

Kids University Mentor - Assist in the facilitation of Kids University after-school program offering educational and sports oriented classes to elementary age children. The ability to act as a strong role model for our program participants is key to this role.

 

Middle School Mentor - Volunteers at Eckstein Middle School are needed for teaching or supporting an afterschool program for middle schoolers. We're always looking for volunteers to come out and lead a class themselves or just join in and provide suppport. Class topics include sports, dance, creative writing, slam poetry, fashion design, leadership classes and art. If you have any interests or special skills, we are open to you approaching us with your own class idea! This is perfect for anyone interested in developing skills for working with youth, or people looking for a fun volunteer opportunity.

 

Assistant Day Camp Counselor - To help facilitate small group activities and assist in field trop coordination. Must be willing to be outdoors, work with kids 6-11 years old and willing to assist with coordinating hiking and various other indoor and outdoor activities.

 

Enrichment Class Teacher - Volunteers facilitate classes at a Community Learning Center afterschool program at Olympic Hills Elementary School in Lake City. Our afterschool program caters to a diverse group of 4-5th grade students. To start, this would be a one-time volunteer opportunity. However, there is the possibility of repeat lessons throughout the school year. Suitable lesson topics include performing arts, fitness and art. We are also open to hearing your ideas if you have a special skill or talent you are interested in sharing.

 

Family Program Assistant - Assist in facilitating culturally relevant and age appropriate activities for children 6 months to 5 years. Assist in supervising children in a positive, fun, safe environment. Enforce safety rules and guidelines.

 

Member Services Assistant - Tasks include engaging with YMCA members, answering questions, about membership and assisting with administrative duties at the front desk. This position is ideal for anyone who loves to engage with people or anyone who would like to deveop their people skills.

 

Special Event Volunteer - Help us with free community events. Help set up and clean up programming area, and participate in special event programming at our YMCA branch and/or school sites. Special events include: Healthy Kids Day, Barbeques, Holiday Open House and many other event opportunities.

 

Volunteer Fitness Instructor - Group Fitness Instructors teach a wide variety of cardio aerobic fitness classes including, Hi-lo, Step, Hip Hop, Kickboxing, Core Strength, Group Cycle etc. Perfect if you are already a YMCA member and presently taking 2-3 fitness classes a week or if you are considering a career in fitness.

 

Healthy Living Talk Instructor - Opportunity open for specialized professionals.

 

Annual Campaign Fundraiser - Every year, our local community comes together to raise money for kids to particpate in Y programs. These are kids who otherwise would be unable to participate and Y programs are a lifeline for these families. We are looking for individuals who who are boldly passionate  and willing to ask others to contribute (financially) to the cause. Every year we rally over 100 volunteers for this effort and we've seen great success because of it. Volunteer "campaigners" will be trained and given a packet of materials to help with fundraising. You will also be well-fed at all of our events.

 

Board of Managers - The Board of Managers of the University Family YMCA leads fundraising efforts and strategic planning implementation. The board works with the Executive Director to advise branch operations. Board members serve three year terms, attend 10 board meetings per year and play a lead role in Partners with Youth and other fundraising efforts.  We are actively recruiting board members who seek to advocate for the Y in the community, are willing to invite community leaders to Y events and consistently model the Y mission.

 

Administrative Assistant - We are looking for detail orientated individuals to help in our administrative office. Get a behind the scenes look at how the YMCA operates by assisting with office related duties. Proficiency with computers, internet and Microsoft Office applications are key to this position. ​
