In YMCA Powerful Schools’ Learning Intervention program, students who are struggling to read and score significantly lower than their peers on reading/ comprehension testing receive individualized, one-on-one reading support from a trained reading tutor for a half-hour each day. In most cases students work with the same tutor over the course of the year, providing struggling students with the consistent support they often lack at home.

Goal: Empower the lowest performing students with strong academic skills.

Key Outcome: Students are proficient in reading by the 3rd grade.

Recent Success: During the 2013-2014 school year, 70% of Powerful Schools’ 280 reading intervention participants met or exceeded at least one measure of success in reading (these include MAP, DRA and/or Fountas & Pinnell Reading Levels). On average, our Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students gained 17 points between their first and last MAP (District) test of the year, while the national average for this age group is 11.77 points.
