ABOUT

We are a year-round team that competes in both the Puget Sound Swimming Association and United States Swimming Association. Swimmers need to show proficiency in the four competitive strokes. We practice in five different groups based upon age, skill level and commitment.

PRACTICE GROUPS

DEVELOPMENTAL 1 (AGES 6 TO 14 YEARS)

This group is dedicated to learning what it means to be part of a swim team year-round or seasonally. The swimmers in this group make up a large part of West Seattle YMCA Dolphins swim team. Swimmers are working on improving their competitive swim strokes, competitive dives, legal turns, sharing a lane with others, learning the basics of pace clock reading, basics of swim sets and the fundamentals of the swim team. These swimmers learn, grow and make a lot of great friends!

Entry Requirements - Requires attendance at two practices per week. Must be able to swim 25 yards of three of the four strokes (Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Freestyle), dive head first from the side of the pool and swim 50 yards without stopping.

Swim Meet Expectations - The swimmers are encouraged to participate in the following meets:

  • Inter-squad/practice swim meets
  • Two YMCA Dual Meets
  • One PSSA Challenge or Invitational swim meet
  • All Dolphin hosted swim meets (Dual/tri/quad meets and/or invitational)
  • Y State Championships
  • One USA (PNS) (challenge meet/invitational)
  • Championship meets for which they qualify(Y league PSSA and USA league PNS)

DEVELOPMENTAL 2 (AGES 8 TO 15 YEARS)

This group is continuing to develop their love for the sport of swimming, the fitness aspect of swimming and the joy of making new friends through a competitive bonding experience focused on Y values. Swimmers in this group will be working on using the pace clock independently, utilizing the pace clock with swim sets and gaining a fitness base. A large part of this group’s skill development will be kicking and technique work. The expectation is that D2 swimmers participate in all Dolphin hosted YMCA meets, all USA (PNS) meets that West Seattle YMCA Dolphins host and swim at all championship meets for which they qualify.

Entry Requirements - Requires attendance at three practices per week. Swim a legal 100 IM, 8 x 50 kick at 1:40, 8 x 50 swim at 1:30 and perform competitive start from blocks.

Swim Meet Expectations - The swimmers are encouraged to participate in the following meets:

  • Inter-squad/practice swim meets
  • Two YMCA Dual Meets
  • One PSSA Challenge or Invitational swim meet
  • All Dolphin hosted swim meets (Dual/tri/quad meets and/or invitational)
  • Y State Championships
  • Two USA (PNS) (challenge meet/invitational)
  • Championship meets for which they qualify(Y league PSSA and USA league PNS)

DEVELOPMENTAL 3 (AGES 10 TO 15 YEARS)

This group is our competitive age group. These swimmers have knowledge of meets, all strokes, racing, turns and dives. They can now begin to focus on speed, strength, endurance and technique. The sets in this group become challenging for goal accomplishment and working on achieving time standards. Technique and kicking are still a large focus.

Entry Requirements - Requires attendance at three practices per week. Understands how to correctly use a pace clock. Swim a 200 IM legally, 8 x 50 kick at 1:20, 8 x 50 swim at 1:00, swim a 50 in 6 breaths max and have consistent turns on all strokes during practice.

Swim Meet Expectations - The swimmers are encouraged to participate in the following meets:

  • Three YMCA Dual Meets
  • One PSSA Challenge or Invitational swim meet
  • All Dolphin hosted swim meets (Dual/tri/quad meets and/or invitational)
  • Y State and Y Regionals swim meets
  • Three USA (PNS) (challenge meet/invitational)
  • Championship meets for which they qualify(Y league PSSA and USA league PNS)

JUNIORS (AGES 11 AND UP)

This group is dedicated to learning how to train properly while maintaining a level of fun through competition, games and a positive social environment. At this level, we hope to see determination for achieving time standards and accomplishing goals set at the beginning of the season. This group will begin racing more, competing more, and finding a level of intrinsic or internal motivation for swimming.

Entry Requirements - Requires attendance at four practices per week. Must have a Y regional time in two or more events, swim the 200 IM under 3:00, swim a 500 free under 7:00, 10 x 50 kick at 1:00 and 10 x 100 swim at 1:40.

Swim Meet Expectations - The swimmers are encouraged to participate in the following meets:

  • All PSSA YMCA Meets
  • All Dolphin hosted swim meets (Dual/tri/quad meets and/or invitational)
  • Y State and Y Regionals swim meets
  • Four USA (PNS) (challenge meet/invitational)
  • Championship meets for which they qualify(Y league PSSA and USA league PNS)

SENIORS (AGES 13 AND UP)

This is our older age group. Those in this group have dedicated themselves to achieving time standards and accomplishing goals. It is a rigorous training period based around competition. This means the swimmers are training 11 months out of the year for two or three meets in order to drop time or qualify for championship meets. Fun and competition balance each other properly in this group.

Entry Requirements - Requires attendance at five practices per week. Must have 2 PNS Champs qualifying times, swim the 400 IM in under 6:00, swim a 500 freestyle in under 6:20, 400 kick under 7:30 and 10 x 100 swim at 1:30.

Swim Meet Expectations - The expectation is that Seniors participate in the following meets:

  • All PSSA YMCA Meets
  • All Dolphin hosted swim meets (Dual/tri/quad meets and/or invitational)
  • Y State and Y Regionals swim meets
  • Five USA (PNS) (challenge meet/invitational)
  • Championship meets for which they qualify(Y league PSSA and USA league PNS)

FEES

Developmental 1: $50.00 per month

Developmental 2: $65.00 per month

Developmental 3: $85.00 per month

Juniors: $95.00 per month

Seniors: $110.00 per month

Nationals: $125.00 per month

There is a $71.00 annual United States Swimming Association fee, a $75.00 annual Team Activity fee and a $20.00 annual swim cap fee. Parent volunteer hours are a requirement as well.

The new swim cap fee covers three team swim caps per season. The three cap limit includes championship meet qualifier caps. Any additional caps will be charged $7.00 latex and $14.00 silicone per cap.
