Hunger Challenge 2010- September 12-18

In Seattle, a city overflowing with great food, 150,000 people aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from.

The Hunger Challenge is about walking in someone else’s shoes for a week. It’s about living with the hard choices of families surviving on food stamps and understanding what it feels like, physically and emotionally.

As a participant, you agree to spend just $4 a day (per person) for your entire food and drink budget – the average amount that food stamp recipients have to spend. Check out the Challenge rules and sign up to participate today! Once you sign up, we’ll send you updates on the campaign and tips and recipes for getting through the Challenge.

2010 Best of Urban Seattle
All of us love to complain about Seattle from time to time. The rents are getting high. Summer took forever to arrive. There's nowhere to park Downtown. But for all the gripes about our city, this is our city- a unique and wonderful mix of sophistication and oddness.
Share with us what makes this city such a special place to live by voting for your favorites for our Best of Urban Seattle 2010 Guide.
Pick up a ballot at the Member Services Desk or download a ballot online.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: Exercise & Thrive
In a partnership between the YMCA of Greater Seattle, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and the LIVESTRONG Foundation, this 12-week physical activity and wellness program (two 90-minute sessions each week) is available at multiple YMCA locations for cancer survivors who are at least 90 days out of cancer treatment. Through Exercise & Thrive, cancer survivors will build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve capacity to perform daily activities. Exercise & Thrive may help reduce the severity of cancer's side effects, prevent unwanted weight changes, and improve participants' energy levels and self-esteem.

Registration:  Space is limited and registration is required. Contact Lindsey Gregerson at 206-344-3181 to register.

Cost:  Realizing that program participants have different abilities to pay, the YMCA has instituted a 3-level fee program to serve all community income levels. You may choose the tier that is most suitable for you. Our goal is to serve all community income levels. Fees range from $25-$165.

Classes meet at the Downtown Seattle YMCA every Monday and Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 13.

For more information, visit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center website.

Free Wireless
The Downtown Seattle YMCA is pleased to announce that there is now an open (non-password-protected) wireless access point in the Membership Services lobby broadcasting its signal for anyone to use.  The wireless network appears as SEAYMCA.
