Volunteering with the Y not only can greatly improve the lives of young people and families and make our communities stronger, but it can also greatly impact your life. Research shows that those who volunteer live longer, healthier lives. In addition to feeling great about your efforts, volunteers have the opportunity to:
- Explore personal interests and passions
- Attend trainings to broaden personal and professional skills
- Include experience on resume or fulfill service requirements
- Develop new relationships and make friends
- Learn, grow and HAVE FUN!
Note: The YMCA does not offer free memberships in exchange for volunteer service. However, volunteers are provided reasonable facility use related to their roles, subject to limits approved by the branch executive. Volunteers may not trade their time for free or reduced cost program participation; doing so creates tax liabilities for both the individual and the YMCA. Insurance is not provided by the YMCA for volunteers.

What can adults do?
Girls Rock! Mentor
Now in its 16th year, Girls Rock! is a 10-week after school mentoring program in which middle school girl participants (ages 11-14) build a diverse, supportive community through leadership, service and rock climbing. Participants are paired 1 on 1 with an adult female mentor and together build a positive relationship, using climbing as a metaphor and vehicle to inspire courage and leadership. Girls Rock! began in 1997 as part of the independent non-profit Passages Northwest, which has since merged to become part of the Metrocenter YMCA of Greater Seattle. The program runs for 10 weeks in the spring and 10 weeks in the fall. Mentors attend 3 days of training before the session, all program dates, and 2 planning and debriefing dinners. Our fall session starts in early September and the spring session starts in the beginning of February.
Serve in a YMCA Leadership Capacity Board and committee members provide strategic direction and governance to our organization. Opportunities include branch boards of managers; financial development, or marketing; program committees and many other opportunities.
Partners With Youth (Fundraising Campaign) Volunteers:
The YMCA Partners With Youth Campaign secures funds from members, local businesses and service clubs to support programs for youth and families. Each February, more than 1,500 volunteers seek the support of other community members to share the story of the Y's positive impact. Because of this volunteer support, 95 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the programs and people who need them. Our Partners With Youth Campaign typically runs February thru March.
Serve in a Y program for teens or young adults: Virtually every program the Y offers also has associated volunteer opportunities. Volunteers throughout the Y teach fitness classes, mentor youth, coach sports teams, organize special events. Metrocenter YMCA volunteers serve as school tutors, technology workshop presenters, career mentors, trip leaders and role models for teens and young adults, and help us have a much greater impact than we ever could with only employees.
What Can Youth and Teens Do?
Program Opportunities There are many opportunities for young people to volunteer at our Y branches. Depending on the needs of each location, students may volunteer at the front desk, as lifeguards or in many other capacities. Check with your local branch to find out how to get involved. Service-Learning Opportunities Service-learning is a process that involves identifying learning objectives, participating in meaningful service, and reflecting on the entire experience. Students have many opportunities to participate in service-learning opportunities at our Y branches. Students can receive credit for service projects conducted through many or our teen programs such as the YMCA Earth Service Corps and other leadership clubs. College students may also work with local branches to create unique service-learning opportunities to fit individual interests.
