 Why the Y?

Why Invest in the Y?

The Coal Creek Family YMCA is strengthening our community by helping families overcome challenges, and we invite you to partner with us.  Every day the Y intentionally provides financial support and the partnership families need to be successful and thrive through innovative preschool; school age, teen and family programs; camps and services.

Addressing Critical Local Needs

Your gift enables the Y to help people affected by some of our community’s most serious issues:

  • More than 13% of Seattle residents are living below the federal poverty level ($22,050 annually for a family of four).
  • In 2009, more than half of King County adults were either overweight or obese, and almost a quarter of young people were overweight or at risk of becoming so.
  • About one-third of Seattle students don’t graduate high school with their peers.

With your support, the Y can continue to address these and other pressing issues – and expand our work to reach more people.

Turn Your Gift Into…

Their Potential
Because we believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, the Y is for Youth Development. Through the Y, thousands of local youth are learning the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement – right now and in the future.

Their Health
Through our 12 branches and two resident camps, the Y promotes Healthy Living. We’re passionate about providing guidance and resources to help people maximize their health and prevent chronic disease. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters community connections through fitness, sports and shared interests.

Their Future
The Y has been listening and responding to the needs of our neighbors for more than 130 years. Social Responsibility is central to who we are. Through education and training in neighborhoods, connecting diverse demographic populations and building healthier communities with partners, the Y fosters care and respect for all.

 Lives Impacted

From a preschool parent
"I have qualified again this year for the third time to make a $500/$250 donation to the charity or charities of my choice. Absolutely I choose to donate the full $500 to Coal Creek Family!!
In 1999 - I divorced and was a single parent returning to work with 2 preschool daughters, I was given a monthly scholarship from the Y to help me to get back on my feet. I could not have returned to work without the financial help. I promised I would someday, hopefully be able to repay the money and afford someone else the same opportunity I was given.
It's the best I can do for now. I have my own financial issues with the events of the last year, but I know there is always someone in need of more help.
Please apply this money to the scholarship fund for parents in need of financial assistance.
Thank you to the entire staff for the hard, important work you do every day! I know you often go without a thank you, or without any recognition for all the good you do daily. I myself have been guilty of being too busy to say thank you."

A Note of Thanks
From an Adventure Guide participant
"Thank you so much for allowing (my daughter) and I to attend this year.  We had a very special weekend and I very much appreciated your kindness and understanding in these very challenging economic times.  I am hopeful in the near future I can “pay it forward” on my end and make a contribution to help others."

Healthy Living
"Since joining the Coal Creek YMCA and going through its Healthy Living Program, I've learned how to incorporate successful and realistic behavior modifications into my life to become healthier. Unlike any other manner of weight loss I've attempted in the past, HLP has taught me how to be healthy without having to sacrifice or suffer (yes, it IS possible!). It's a lifestyle change, not a diet. By learning how to adopt the right healthy behaviors, I've already lost 35 lbs. and have much more energy than before. HLP provides the tools and a great support group to help personalize the program for each individual's needs."
